WHERE IS GOD IN TIMES OF SUFFERING ?

I take the topic of health personally, very personally. Because, you see, I have been on the other end of an all-out onslaught to stop, maim, and kill me for my entire life. One of the main weapons used against me was physical illness, disease, and false approaches to “health”.

My friends are my family and when they’re sick, I can feel it. When my husband and daughter are sick, I feel it. It’s no wonder I decided to become a doctor of natural medicine. I had to. I couldn’t find the right doctor for me so I became one.

I view things differently – it’s life and death and the fight goes beyond people.

It’s principalities. It’s spiritual. It’s personal.

Maybe you can imagine my irritation upon realizing that my family is now fighting what has been termed “C-V” (for the second time). Yeah, not happy. We take all the right supplements and vitamins. We eat biblically clean. We nebulize and diffuse all the things. We’ve already been thru a round of this junk, last year, so I thought we were beyond it.

It just goes to show you how aggressive this illness is. How pointed it is. How it can target anyone.

It’s principalities. It’s spiritual. It’s personal.

So we keep taking the right supplements and vitamins. We’re still nebulizing and diffusing all the things. I have plans. I have back up plans – all for “just in case”. Some of it is a waiting game. It’s all being bathed in prayer.

And as the world is full of bad news, loved ones clinging to life…and some losing theirs, wars, rumors of wars, increased hatred among people, etc. – the literal war for our lives increases. Everyone is being affected, deeply, by one thing or another. One has to wonder where GOD is in all of it.

So, I asked. Yeah, I asked Yeshua (Jesus) this morning where He was in all of it. I know what the Bible says and I believe it. But I still needed to hear from Him.

And I found Him……sitting down on the beach of a lake. He was skipping rocks into the water. It wasn’t for sport or fun. He was waiting. And He seemed irritated. I sat down beside Him. We sat in silence, together, as I watched Him skipping the rocks over and into the water.

He’s really good at it. Each rock stayed above the water for a long time before being pulled down by their weight. A feat that I tried, as a child, but never quite succeeded at – not consistently anyways.

The sky was ablaze with pinks, and purples, as the sun set low in the distance. He had been here a long time. Waiting. Irritated. His brow furrowed. His hand clinched as He hurled each rock into the lake.“

This had to happen,“ He said, his gaze remained on the water. And He just kept skipping those rocks in. I dare not ask why this had to happen but I knew that He was referring to what we were all going thru, on a personal scale as well as world-wide. It wasn’t just about me or my family.

Of course, He knew that I was wondering “why”, even though I didn’t ask. He answered me: “It’s principalities.”

Then He forcefully skipped a rock into the lake.

“It’s spiritual.” Another rock went in.

“It’s personal.” Another rock hurled in.

He stopped skipping rocks at that point. In this solemn understanding, we sat. For the very battle I had fought all of my life – with all the feelings attached – were His feelings in this moment.

And He had to keep waiting for now. We all do. And it’s hard. It’s irritating.

I thought of how He whittled that tree branch into a whip, that one time. While He whittled, He waited. And that’s where we are right now – in that moment of tension, that moment of wait, of irritation.

He turned to me. Our eyes met. “Thank you for sitting with me.”He was grateful for MY company. Mine?

He offered no promises of things turning out okay. That all seems a bit trite now anyways, don’t you think.

But He said this:“I’m with you, always.”

“Oh hey (yes, Yeshua said “hey”) it’s your birthday today. I’m sorry, but you gift is going to be late this year.” Then He turned His gaze back to the lake and began skipping rocks again.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void,

But it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.“ For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; and it shall be to the Lord for a name,

For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” — Isaiah 55:6-13

If you are currently enduring a time of suffering, please know that you are NOT alone. GOD IS with you. He is guiding you, and loving you, thru it all.

Shalom to you,

How to recognize a trauma-bond friendship

Trauma Bonding occurs when a person, living with some sort of unresolved pain, recognizes a similar pain in another person. The two sufferers, then, begin a friendship based on their pain. This leads to all sorts of dysfunction within the relationship that will, inevitably, leak into other parts of life and other relationships as well.

At first, this may seem like a positive friendship because, after all, they’ve found someone who can relate to what they’ve been through. It’s always comforting to know you’re not alone. While this type of friendship does not always turn out dysfunctional, I will be highlighting how toxicity can manifest.

If the friends become more content within trauma, and pain, than intent on their own personal growth and healing then toxicity is certain to follow. This “contentment” is nothing more than settling for a lifelong trauma response. Inevitably, at least one of the parties involved will end up feeling stuck in life and, sadly, may wonder why.

Please understand that I am not speaking out against someone who needs support from their friends during a trying season of life. I am also not speaking against sharing burdens with friends.

To the contrary, what I encourage you to consider is a friendship that is taking too much from you – so much, in fact, that it is causing anxiety, further pain, and loss of personal growth, health, and freedom.

Another Layer:

If one of the parties involved has a leaning towards narcissistic behavior, then most likely the other party has empathic, or very compassionate leanings. This will cause the trauma based “friendship” to have an extra layer of toxicity.

The deep compassionate nature, of the empathic friend will be taken advantage of by the narcissist. In spite of the red flags, and abuse, the empath often remains stuck within the trauma based “friendship” with the narc because, after all, they recognize (and connect with) what appears to be – a similar type of shared pain.

Yet Another Layer:

There is another type of trauma bond which manifests when the non-narc feels underlying anxiety, or fear, around the narcissist. Deep down, the non-narc party recognizes that the other party is unsafe.

But, due to fear of rejection, questioning their own intuition, or under serious deception, they choose to allow the narcissist to remain in their lives. This often turns into the non-narc relying on the narcissist to “protect” them. Think Stockholm Syndrome.

Bottom Line:

If you’re wondering if your “friendship” is toxic, or if someone is holding you back in life, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

– Does my “friend” (relative, spouse, etc) celebrate my victories?

– Does my “friend” (relative, spouse, etc) encourage my efforts towards health and healing (mind, body & spirit)?

– Does my “friend” (relative, spouse, etc) give me space to grow or resent my efforts to better myself?

– What do the conversations between this person, and I, mostly center around?

– Can I, safely, confront this person if there is an issue, between us, that we need to discuss OR am I afraid of how they will react?

– Is there an issue, between us, that the person refuses to address in spite of my attempt to discuss it?

– How does my “friend” (relative, spouse, etc) speak of other people who question them?

We are all on a healing journey. Friendships can be such a blessing in this life! However, we must be wise with who we choose to spend our time with, and open our hearts to. GOD has called us to be kind to others…but not to be a doormat. If someone is standing in the way of your health, personal growth, and well-being then they do not have your best interests in mind.

This topic is very serious and can be multi-layered. There are many things that can be affected by a trauma-based friendship – whether there is a narcissistic element at play or not.

However, praying through these things and learning to recognize what you’re dealing with are the first steps to breaking free.

Our need to get well, and live well, is just as vital as our need for friendship.

When our relationships are healthy – it aids in our overall health and well-being.

Shalom to you,

newly diagnosed – now what?

So you’ve just been diagnosed with an auto-immune disease…or maybe you’ve been diagnosed for a while and are wondering what exactly this means for your life. You’ve probably been counseled to take prescription medications. You may have been told that what you’re facing is “incurable”. You may be grieving. You may even be afraid.

However you may be feeling, please know that fear, anger, and grief are valid. The physical pain and uncertainty that so often comes with autoimmunity can be overwhelming. The process of getting a correct diagnosis can even last years and be exhausting.

I’ve been down this road before and have three things that I’d like to encourage you with.

#1: You are NOT a diagnosis. A diagnosis can help shine light on which area, of your health, needs attention. BUT it is not telling you who you are. It doesn’t have to become your identity. It is not condemning you to a future of limitations. Medical professionals, although well-meaning, do not know exactly what your future holds.

#2: You ARE powerful. As one of my favorite mentors used to always say: “If you weren’t born with it, then you don’t have to live with it.” (Roby Mitchell) When it comes to addressing auto-immunity, there are options out there that go beyond allopathic medicine’s “answers”. By getting to the root cause of auto-immunity via proper nutrition, lifestyle changes, and proper supplementation, there is a very good possibility that your symptoms may lessen and the disease process may even be halted.

Check out this post for more on root causes of autoimmunity: https://shalomtotalwellness.com/2020/08/10/autoimmunity-decoded/

#3: You are NOT alone. It may feel a bit lonely, right now, but you are never alone. Many people have traversed this path. Find the support you need. I am cheering you on! And remember that GOD is not surprised by your present health struggle. He has solutions for your health and wellness. You are always on His heart and He is always there for you.

Auto-immunity is a serious situation. Your body is sending you a message that things must change. But it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. You can switch the disease/diagnosis narrative by putting your energy into making the necessary changes that will place your body in healing mode. You got this!

Shalom to you,

The nutrition principle: feeding the temple

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.“– 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The above verse points out that our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit. In addition, we are to use our bodies to glorify GOD.

If we believe this to be true, then shouldn’t we be thoughtful of how we treat our bodies? If “yes” then this must include what we eat. After all, what we eat is the foundation of health and is often the determining factor in whether our health will be good or bad.

Vanity and an unhealthy focus on our bodies is, of course, to be avoided. Even exercise can get out of control when we place a greater emphasis on it, than on spiritual matters.

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” – 1 Timothy 4:8

However, if our bodies are the “temple” which the Holy Spirit resides in,then we ought to care for our bodies accordingly – not in an obsessive way that would place a higher importance on physical care than on our spiritual needs. But in a way that is proper and pleasing to Creator God.

When we consume GMOs (genetically modified foods), junk food, food that is laden with chemicals/antibiotics, and copious amounts of sugar, then our bodies respond with inflammation, pain, and the beginning stages of dis-EASE and dis-ORDERS. In fact, many of the items being consumed, today, shouldn’t be thought of as food.

The book of Genesis explains that Adam was made from the dust of the earth…and it is things that grow from the earth that our bodies respond best to.

One of the simplest ways that we can honor Creator, in our bodies, is by consuming food that He approves of. But where do we begin? What does God think about food? Does He really care about what we eat? In the Genesis account, Adam was given the following instructions:

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” – Genesis 1:29 (KJV)

Creator God was even very specific about what the animals would be permitted to consume:

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.” – Genesis 1:30 (KJV)

From the very beginning, God points out what IS for eating and what is NOT for eating. Can you imagine living in paradise, surrounded by myriads of beautiful, delicious, eating options? Adam, and his wife, were given an endless supply of perfectly created food.

Although we cannot, and will not be able to, recreate the conditions needed for a Garden of Eden we can honor Creator God by doing our best to eat food that is as pure as possible. Avoiding genetically modified food (GMO’s) is one of the ways we can do this.

It should go without saying, although sadly it must be said, that “organic” is also the way to go when choosing foods as well.

Health, and wellness, begins with proper nutrition. What we eat not only feeds our stomachs – it also feeds our cells. When our nutritional choices go against what we need, our bodies suffer at a cellular level.

Our bodies were created to heal naturally. Eating things that were never intended to be food, leaves our bodies unable to respond correctly to illness. In fact, oftentimes, our bodily systems go into dis-EASE mode due to a lack of nutrients and an inflammatory environment produced by incorrect nutrition.

Embrace the fact that your body is a temple by making healthy, healing, nutritional choices. Small choices now, will help build a foundation of health for life.

Shalom to you all – Dr. Karen Michelle Ricci ND

Autoimmunity: decoded

The steady rise of autoimmune diseases should be quite alarming, however, they certainly doesn’t get the attention they should for many reasons. First among these reasons is the fact that it is so difficult to get a correct diagnosis. Many sufferers will go through multiple doctors before being diagnosed and it is even more difficult to find treatment that actually helps.

Second, autoimmune disorders are often looked at like they are a mystery. Questions like “Why do I have an autoimmune disease?”, “How did this start?”, and “Is there anything I can do besides medication?” rarely get answered. Not addressing the root cause places the patient in a cycle of trying different medications but rarely finding something that arrests the auto immune activity. .

I’d like to interject, however, that autoimmune issues are not the mystery we’ve been led to believe they are. Below are a few things that should strongly be considered when looking into possible root causes. The following should also be considered when addressing areas that may need some healing solutions – in regards to all dis-ORDERS and dis-EASES.

(1) Faulty Nutrition. When our bodies don’t receive the nutrition they need, free radicals can form. This often causes a crisis of inflammation within our bodies as well as vitamin deficiencies. Our immune systems receive the wrong message (to “fight”) and then will attack things that they shouldn’t like joints, myelin, stomach lining, the colon, etc.

(2) Vitamin Deficiencies. Like mentioned above, when our bodies are in a state of vitamin deficiency, our immune systems receive the wrong messaging and may end up attacking our bodies. The type of deficiencies a person has may even play a role in what type of autoimmune issue they’re dealing with.

(3) Toxins. The world we live in certainly isn’t the world our great grandparents lived in. Pollution, radiation exposure from tech devices, vaccination, medication, and chemicals in cleaning products just barely scratch the surface. Some people seem to be more sensitive to the aforementioned or, at the very least, feel the effects more rapidly. Toxins wreak havoc on an immune system and can play a role in autoimmunity.

(4) Weakened Gut Health. Up to 80% of our immune system is housed in our gut (stomach, intestines = everything gastrointestinal related). Proper gut health is key for proper immune system activity and is linked to all other bodily systems. When gut health is ignored, or becomes weakened, then the way is paved for illness and disease.

If you are looking into natural ways to combat autoimmunity, then the above may seem a bit overwhelming. However, rather than looking at these things like problems, look at them as opportunities. After all, once the light of truth shines on a problem, the solution is not far behind!

I’d like to encourage you to do your own research, and self assessment, in these areas.

(As always, this information is for educational purposes. Medication decisions are between you and your doctor.)

Shalom to you all – Dr. Karen Michelle Ricci, N.D.

IMMUNOLOGY 101: A SANE APPROACH TO COVID19

One thing that can be said about this whole “COVID19” ordeal, without a doubt, is the lack of knowledge so many people have of how our GOD-given immune system works, what keeps a person healthy, and the role of antigens within the body.

Sheer ignorance is something that we should be patient with because, obviously, no one knows everything. But when hateful belligerence becomes the response of the ignorant upon hearing the TRUTH, then we truly are dealing with a different sort of brain washing. This type of blind abandonment which favors fear and hatred is very concerning!

The following explanation, by Dr. Dan Erickson, deserves not only to be considered, but also to be highlighted. After all, REAL knowledge is self-empowering and (as we are seeing these days) trying to be snuffed out.

“The immune system is built by exposure to antigens… viruses, bacteria. When you’re a little child crawling on the ground, putting stuff in your mouth, viruses and bacteria come in, you form an antigen-antibody complex… you form IgG, IgM… This is how your immune system is built.

You don’t take a small child, put them in bubble wrap in a room and say, go have a healthy immune system. This is immunology, microbiology 101. This is the basis of what we’ve known for years. So what I’m seeing is when you take human beings and you say, go into your house, clean all your counters, Lysol them down… you’re going to kill 99% of viruses and bacteria, wear a mask, don’t go outside… What does that do to our immune system?

Our immune system is used to touching. We share bacteria, staphylococcal, streptococcal bacteria, viruses. We develop an immune response daily with this stuff. When you take that away from me, my immune system drops. As I shelter in place, my immune system drops. You keep me there for months, it drops more. And now I’m at home hand washing vigorously, washing the counters, worried about things that are, indeed, what I need to survive.

Let’s follow the science. This is immunology folks, this is microbiology. This is common sense immunology. If someone has a reduced immune system, you hide them away because they can’t build an immune system. If you have a normal functioning immune system, you need interaction.

When a child is in a womb, you’re in this protected environment. When you come out, you have almost no immune system. You develop that through touching your mouth, touching your eyes, virus, bacteria, virus, bacteria, immune response, IgG, IgM. This is how you build a strong immune system.”— Dan Erickson, MD, emergency medicine, Accelerated Urgent Care in Bakersfield, California

It is my sincere hope that the TRUTH behind getting well, staying well, and living well will begin to GROW and that we will become a healthier people. Regardless of the world systems, the hateful, the fearful, and those who choose blatant ignorance – the TRUTH WILL COME FORTH for those who have ears to hear!

Shalom to you! —
